- Subject: Re: [IML] QUEST: Volumetrics
-
- I just had an idea, but am not sure if it would work and am not at home to try
- it....
-
- To simulate volumetrics (at least as I have seen them appear in the example
- images) on a simple level (one object blocking the visible light) you can take
- the object that is blocking the light, remove all the points from the far side
- (side away from the light source) to create a almost flat object, then extrude
- that away from the light (in Y) and increase it in X and Z. Then use that new
- object to SLICE from the fog object used to create visible light.
-
- Like I said, I am not sure if this would work, but it was an idea that I would
- try to simulate the effect if I was at home...anyone willing to test this?

- Actually Chuck, since Slice is still temperamental, I have a different
- twist on your suggestion. I don't know if it'll work, though; my BVRE
- has a hard time dealing with the Imagine exceptions caused by multiple
- fog objects. Use the same technique you'd use for a bright volumetric
- beam of light: take the silhouette of your object, extrude it (creating
- an extrusion with closed ends), give it a fog attribute, and color it
- _black_. Shouldn't this give a fake, but feasible, shadow effect?

- If I remember correctly (it has been a while with this one) wasn't there a
- "bug/feature" that two fog objects overlapping cancel one another out? Does
- this still work? Slice would not be needed at all...just have the visible
- light object (fog), the original object, and the extruded silhouette object
- (also fog) and where the extruded object exists within the visible light, you
- have cancellation.
